Rincón, Puerto Rico

Warm-water winter swell and one of the world's few true towfoil retreats

You let go of the rope on a warm-water roller off Rincón and the foil just keeps running, wave after wave folding down the northwest coast. This is the Caribbean's swell magnet: winter energy from the North Atlantic, water you can session in boardshorts, and a coastline that still feels like a small surf town. For US travelers it may be the easiest serious tow trip on the map.

Plan this trip

Season

November to April

Best months

December to March

Level

Intermediate to advanced. You should be comfortable riding the foil behind the ski and linking turns on open swell; solid foilers who have never towed can be brought up to speed in the first session.

The water

Conditions

Winter swell out of the North Atlantic wraps the northwest corner of Puerto Rico from November through April, delivering long-period energy into 80-degree water. Between the marquee surf breaks sit open-water rollers and softer shoulders that make ideal tow terrain: consistent push, room to run, no crowd to negotiate. Trade winds tend to fill in midday, so tow blocks run early on glassy faces. Boardshorts and a light top are all you need.

Who it's for

Is this your trip?

Foilers who want a real winter tow fix without long-haul logistics: East Coast Americans fly direct, skip the passport, and are on the water the same day. Also a strong pick for mixed groups, since Rincón delivers surf, food, and beach time for non-towing partners.

Our take

Why we love it

  • A true packaged towfoil retreat, not a bolted-on extra
  • 80-degree water through the entire winter swell season
  • No passport for US citizens and direct East Coast flights to Aguadilla
  • Glassy morning tow windows before the trades fill in
  • A proper surf town for the hours off the water

The standout operation on the northwest coast runs one of the few genuine packaged towfoil retreats anywhere, and a second outfit up in Isabela offers tow sessions when conditions line up. That depth of local tow knowledge is rare in the Caribbean.

Logistics

Getting there

Airport

Aguadilla (BQN), 30 minutes away with direct East Coast flights; San Juan (SJU) is a 2.5-hour drive with more connections.

Stay

Rincón proper for walkable restaurants and sunset lineups, or a quieter villa toward Aguada or Isabela closer to the tow zones. We book to match your group.

The plan

US territory, so Americans need no passport and no customs. Rent a car; the breaks spread along 30 miles of coast and dawn starts are the rule.
